ARTIST TREVOR “STICKMAN” STICKEL TO DEBUT HIS PARK WEST COLLECTION FALL 2024

Renowned music-inspired painter whose pop-realism works capture legendary moments, powerful ideas, and raw emotion joins the world-class artist roster at Park West Gallery.

Southfield Michigan & Miami Florida  September 2024 : Park West Gallery proudly announces the addition of celebrated Contemporary artist Trevor “Stickman” Stickel to its roster of world-class artists.  This exciting partnership promises to bring to Park West Gallery Collectors the unique and innovative works of “Stickman” an accomplished and highly collected painter specializing in the decadence and romance of Rock 'N Roll.  Park West Gallery Collectors throughout the world will now be able to experience what art collectors, famous musicians and die-hard fans worldwide have: The Art of Stickman.

Stickman is a highly regarded and widely collected music inspired painter, whose pop-realism works capture legendary moments, powerful ideas, and raw emotion, and whose work has been described in the art world as “gritty-yet fresh, complex-yet simple”.

His journey to globally-renowned creator has led him most recently to be featured in a solo museum exhibition at the Cornell Art Museum in January of 2024, an interview and feature and cover presence in February’s issue of Modern Drummer Magazine, an on-stage presentation to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Cheap Trick with a commissioned artwork, inclusion in important private collections, a commission for Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders and a significant donation to the Modern Drummer Frangione Foundation of his seminal work:  “Watch Him As He Goes”.

“These past few years have just been tremendous for my artistry, and I am beyond thrilled and certainly quite honored for the opportunity to be a part of the Park West family”, says Trevor.

"We're honored to represent such an intriguing and visionary artist.  It’s a fresh and exciting genre for us and he brings such high energy and incredible visuals to his work”, said John Block, Park West Gallery’s Chief Operating Officer.

The Rock genre was created on rebellion and a fight for freedom of expression as an artist, which is something I will always champion. The visceral need to express the romance in the juxtapositions of these worlds drives me to make visual the landscapes and lore of rock and roll once relegated to the record player – to capture the transcendental euphoria of stumbling out of the Roxy and the Troubadour at dawn next to the immortal legends."  - Stickman

About Trevor “Stickman” Stickel

Trevor “Stickman” Stickel specializes in music inspired pop-realism paintings that capture legendary moments, powerful ideas, and raw emotion. His work is described as gritty-yet fresh, complex-yet simple. Graduating from a Jekyll and Hyde influence early in his career, in which he divided his time between family portraits and airbrush design work on helmets and Harleys, Stickman had the epiphany to combine both styles while reading “According to the Rolling Stones”. Two weeks later he finished his first canvas portrait of Mick Jagger, aptly titled “Please allow me to introduce myself”, which forever changed the direction of his career in the art world.

THE MISSION

The idea or "mission" behind Stickman’s artwork is to create an artistic tribute to the music, musicians and icons that have had a tremendous impact on him and many others. Historically, these tributes would have been limited to photos/posters. Stickman aims to create a style of art that brings these iconic figures and songs back into our lives in a unique way through fine art.

THE CONCEPT

The concept of Stickman’s work is to combine realism, pop-art, impressionism, and other disciplines of art to express the feelings and emotions of the subject or musical inspiration. This approach allows him to explore the artistic side of these pieces, while paying additional homage to some of his favorite visual artists.  The artwork oozes swagger, and his energetic depiction of Rock 'N Roll icons is suffused with romanticism, opulence, and grit.

THE SYMBOL

In addition to the art itself, Stickman also adds (and quite often hides) his trademarked Stickman symbol (stick figure with devil horns). The Stickman symbol is derived from Stickman’s last name (Stickel) and a common phrase he hears from viewers, "I can't even draw a stick man". The horns represent rock and roll (his primary inspiration) and references the duality of man (good vs evil).

THE TITLE

The title of each piece may very well be the most important piece of the puzzle. Stickman looks for a lyric that he believes personifies the subject or his feeling toward that subject, and then strives to create an image and feeling that takes the viewer to that emotional state of mind. The titles are always a lyric from the song of inspiration, but rarely the title of a song. If the viewer is a fan of the song, they should almost hear the lyric or feel the emotion of the lyric when looking at the piece. Knowing the title completes the emotional connection to the painting.

NEW RELEASE: Anemone

One of the biggest rock stars of my generation wasn’t known for music at all. Anthony Bourdain may not have been known for music, but his charisma and devil may care attitude made him as cool as any lead singer I’ve seen.

I’m not much of a foodie so I was probably a late adopter of Anthony, but as an avid traveler his collection of shows became a guide that Ray and I would use frequently.

For the concept, I wanted to give a nod to the travel aspect of his celebrity, and Paris just seemed to make sense. With his stardom coming from a French restaurant in NYC, to the place of his passing, it just seemed to work, especially with the glass of wine I wanted to portray. For the color palette, I turned to Anthony’s favorite song (reportedly), "Anemone" by the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The melancholy vibe of the song made the greys and blues pop into my head.

As a bonus during the painting of this piece I downloaded a playlist of Anthony’s favorite music, and it was the greatest surprise and one last gift. The list was an unapologetic New York assortment of genres that included Lou Reed, The New York Dolls, Marvin Gaye, Iggy Pop, etc.

NEW RELEASE: That's All Right Momma

NEW ART RELEASE

“That’s All Right Momma”
Acrylic on Canvas

As per usual, this concept developed from two different ideas. Ever since Baz Luhrmann’s movie “Elvis” was released, my love for Elvis was re-invigorated. It’s easy to find new love and inspiration for a character that goes through so many changes over the years – and the movie really made me more appreciative of the late sixties early 70s era. Aesthetically, it was the coolest version of the man for my tastes (wearing the black leather suit on the comeback special helped and shouldn’t surprise anyone that knows me or my art).

The other conceptual idea I had was to pay homage to the first iteration of the pageantry of music – the 45 single record. For my generation, this was usually our introduction to owning music. I have fond memories of running to Abbottsfield mall when I was able to scrounge together a $1.50. From here I had the idea to go back to a culturally changing moment (by now we all know Elvis didn’t invent rock 'n' roll – but he did assist in bringing it to the forefront of pop culture) and pay homage to Sam Phillips and Sun Records' release of Elvis’ first single “That’s All Right”.

NEW RELEASE: Dressing for Revenge (Mic Drop)

Dressing for Revenge (Mic Drop)

Now, I’m not about to say I’m a big Swiftie…but I’m not a hater either. She’s just not quite my vibe, if you couldn’t tell.

However, with all the hype surrounding her and the Era’s tour there are a few things that started to hit home for me, and if nothing more, made me see her in a different light.

If you want to read more on what those things were and how this painting came to be, check out this link: https://www.stickmanfineart.com/rockstars#/dressing-for-revenge-mic-drop/
